Jazz Combo:
The Jazz Combo is a small improvisational group that proves that it don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing. Directed by Mr. Bart Weisman, the Jazz Combo performed a variety of songs. They played “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” by John Frederick Coots and Haven Gillespie, “Take the A Train” by Billy Strayhorn, “The Man I Love” by George Gershwin, and “Caravan” by Juan Tizol and Duke Ellington. The combo is composed of Jack Holland on guitar, Cecelia Kane on piano, David Girardin on the bass, Seth Coellner on the drums, and two vocalists, Thea Goldman and Hannah Allen. This is a very talented group of individuals who were incredible in the performance!
Half Step Down:
This group is a fantastic a capella group that proves that you do not need an instrument to make beautiful music. The director is none other than Mr. Liam Mahony, who taught the group how to harmonize some lovely pieces for the concert. Half Step Down performed “Settle Down” by Kimbra with soloists Tianna Smith and Jasmine Macdonald, “The Christmas Song” by Pentatonix with soloists Maris Poepsel and Hannah Allen, and “Angels We Have Heard on High” by Ken Malucelli and Deke Sharon. The Half Step Down members are Zoe Nicholson, Hannah Allen, Jasmine Macdonald, Maris Poepsel, Tianna Smith, Thea Goldman, and David Girardin. It was evident through the applause they received that Half Step Down was a popular act in the concert
Sturgis Strings:
The Sturgis String ensemble is an enthusiastic group of strings players. Their director, Mr. Dan Flonta, is not only a terrific director but also a phenomenal violinist. The Sturgis Strings performed “Christmas Canon” by Michael Green and “Viva la Vida” by Coldplay. The Sturgis Strings members are none other than Connor Holmes, Sophia Beauregard, Hannah Allen, and Carolyn Hanrahan. All of our wonderful violinists really rocked during the concert.
The Sturgis Notables: The Notables are actually part of the Sturgis curriculum. They are Sturgis’s grade nine and ten choir; and as the name suggests, they were quite notable. Directed by the famous Natalie Sheeler, the Notables performed a variety of songs from different cultures. The Notables enchanted the audience with “Sansa Kroma” by Felicia A.B. Sandler, “One Voice” by Ruth Moody, and “Seasons of Love” from “Rent” by Jonathan Larson . The Notables are divided into four groups depending on voice type. The sopranos are Zoe Nicholson, Brianna Amaral, Kyra Brimdryr, Eva DeWitt, Angelina Neto, Morgan Lopez-Mata, and Hailey Roth-Cerce.The mezzo-sopranos are Meagan Bilodeau, Keira Foley, Alexia Holbert-Catania, Anna Carley, Shelby Upton, Olivia Wilson, and Alexandria Zine. The altos are Emily Boyle, Cecelia Kane, Isabella Willette-Thuet, Hannah Colantuono, and Christiana Paulin. Finally, the tenors are Noah Singer and Michael Fitzgerald. The Sturgis Singers are an elite group of singers who have gifted voices. Directed by Natalie Sheeler, the Singers performed many pieces that highlighted their skill and determination. The Singers performed “Exsultate Justi” by John Williams, “A Charlie Brown Christmas” by Steve Zegree, and “Creep” by Radiohead. The Sturgis Singers members are Vivian Levine, Jasmine McDonald, Hannah Allen, Rachel Souza, Thea Goldman, Cecelia Kane, David Girardin, and Ian Morris. Cecelia Kane, Hannah Allen, David Girardin, and Ian Morris also made the All-Cape Music Festival. These students performed their audition piece called “In These Delightful Pleasant Groves” by Henry Purcell. David and Ian also made the Southeast District Music Festival, and Ian was recommended for the All State Festival. These students have made some incredible accomplishments in the Singers and were terrific in the Winter Concert.
The IB music students actually are the students from the IB Music class. With the help of their teacher, Natalie Sheeler, the students were able to come together and perform the well known “Santa Baby” in the style of Eartha Kitt. The students who performed were Sophia Beauregard, Cedar Coellner, Ian Cole, Eliana Freeland, David Girardin, Victoria MacIsaac, Bobby Simmons, and Tianna Smith. The IB students did an exceptional job and shared their joy of performing with the audience.
Jazz Ensemble
The Jazz Ensemble is the group of student musicians from all grades that plays instruments from flute to piano. Bart Weisman directed this delightful group of musicians and had them play many classic pieces. They performed “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Harold Arlen, “Winter Wonderland” by Richard Smuthand Felix Bernard, “Our Love Is Here To Stay” by George Gershwin, and “Also Sprach Zarathustra” by Richard Strauss. The members of this ensemble are Emily Spinello on flute, Rebecca Leduc on clarinet, Lucy knox on saxophone, Noah Singer on trombone, Cecelia Kane on piano, Mark Agostinelli on guitar, David Girardin on bass, and Seth Coellner on drums. The audience is looking forward to an encore performance of the group at the spring concert.
The Finale Everyone performed the well known song “It Feels Like Christmas” by Paul Williams from the Muppets’ Christmas Carol. It touched the hearts of everyone in the audience. We would like to thank all of the directors and all of the performers for their hard work. We also want to thank the parents, family members, friends, and audience members who supported and applauded each group.
