The triumvirate planned several different events in order to raise as much money as possible. Throughout the game, players and audience members were encouraged to enter the 50/50 raffle, a contest that resulted in a prize of over $100 for the winner! Many attendees also participated in the Hoop-a-thon, in which donors would give a certain amount of money for each point scored by Sturgis East. These donations ranged from 10 cents to a dollar per point!
Perhaps the most captivating activity was the halftime 3-point contest. Participants had nine opportunities from beyond the arc, three shots from three different spots, to convert as many attempts as possible. The winner would take home a valuable Dunkin’ Donuts gift card, a highly treasured prize among Sturgis students who frequently purchase coffee there before school. In a battle of the ages, sophomore Franz Abagat narrowly edged out senior Evan Taubert with a score of 6-5 to win the prized possession!
Although their initial goal was to raise $1300, the girls have already surpassed $2,090 in donations, and that number is rising every day. “We thank our supporters for not only helping us reach our goal but to almost double it,” remarks senior Julia Buckner. “We will now be able to build four houses for the very deserving people of Canaan!”
If anyone still wishes to make a donation, checks can be written to Sturgis Charter Public school, indicating “Hoops for Haiti” in the notation line. Donations can also be made by credit card using the PayPal button on the right side of the Sturgis website.
