On October 23, 2015, at 6:30 p.m, the Sturgis East and West boys’ soccer teams will play in their third annual Homecoming game. In 2013, East routed West with a final score of 3-0; and in 2014, West scored in the final two minutes of the rematch to tie the game 1-1. While many are hesitant to encourage competition between the East and West boys’ soccer teams, the game ultimately increases school spirit, makes teams more skilled, and ultimately brings both campuses together.
As students from both schools watch and cheer with chants such as “I believe that we will win” and “Oh, when the Storm goes marching in”, the breathtaking atmosphere indubitably increases school spirit and morale. When they see in person how skilled the players are, classmates begin to attend more games.
Because of the large number of students, faculty, and parents who attend this night game, each athlete will have prepared for months to impress the crowd. This brings out all the adrenaline, ball skills, and hustle that each player can possibly muster. As each sportsman looks to create a good reputation for himself among his family and friends, it becomes a time to see who can go home as the hero of his school.
The Homecoming game between the East and West campuses brings both groups together. After the game, the two teams always shake hands and congratulate each other. From first-hand experience, I can say that the Homecoming game has even created many friendships with West students whom I would never have met otherwise.
The Sturgis Homecoming game brings out the best of the squads, increases school spirit campus-wide, and brings the two campuses together. Don’t miss the next thrilling Homecoming game on October 23 at 6:30 p.m. at Old Town House Field!
